Platform

As someone who has called Hanahan home for more than 30 years, I’ve had a front-row seat to both the incredible growth of our city and the challenges that come with it. I’m committed to protecting the small-town character that makes Hanahan such a special place while ensuring families can thrive, businesses can succeed, and growth is managed responsibly—not recklessly. Hanahan’s future should be built on smart planning, strong community values, and leadership that puts residents first.

Transparency

Traffic and Infrastructure

Transparency is the foundation of good government. The people of Hanahan deserve leadership that communicates openly, explains decisions clearly, and puts the community, not politics or backroom conversations, at the center of every major decision. I believe residents should know how and why decisions are being made on growth, infrastructure, spending, and development before those decisions are finalized, not after. As your council representative, I’ll fight for honest communication, accountability, and a city government that listens to its residents, earns their trust, and keeps them informed every step of the way.

Traffic and Infrastructure

Traffic and Infrastructure

Our city's growth has brought with it increased traffic congestion, particularly along key corridors like North Rhett Avenue, Yeamans Hall Road, Murray Drive and Tanner Ford Boulevard. I propose a comprehensive traffic management plan that includes improved traffic signal coordination, expanded roadways where feasible, and enhanced pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure to reduce vehicle dependency. I know this will have to be a inter-agency effort with city, county and state involvement as the problems don’t end at our city limits.

Public Safety

Public safety is one of the most important responsibilities of local government, and as Hanahan grows, our police, fire, and emergency services must grow with it. I will advocate for smart investments in staffing, training, equipment, and infrastructure to ensure our first responders have the resources they need to protect our community effectively. That includes supporting community policing, strengthening rapid response capabilities, and planning proactively so public safety keeps pace with growth—not falls behind it. A safe community is the foundation for strong neighborhoods, thriving businesses, and a better quality of life for every resident.

Smart Growth and Development

Smart Growth and Development

While growth is essential for economic vitality, it must be managed wisely to maintain our quality of life. I am committed to smart growth principles that prioritize sustainable development, green spaces, and preserving the character of our neighborhoods. I will work to update zoning regulations to reflect the needs of our growing population while protecting our charm.

Supporting Local Businesses

Smart Growth and Development

Supporting Local Businesses

Our small businesses are the backbone of Hanahan’s economy. I will champion initiatives that provide more resources and support for local entrepreneurs, including streamlined permitting processes, grants, and marketing assistance. A thriving business community means more jobs and a stronger local economy.

Parks and Recreation

Supporting Local Businesses

Our parks and recreational facilities are vital to our community's well-being. I will work to ensure they are well-maintained and expanded where necessary. I support the development of additional recreational programs for all ages, promoting healthy lifestyles and community engagement.

About Me

William Axson is a devoted husband, father, small business owner, and longtime Hanahan resident who believes the best leadership starts with service, accountability, and community trust. Since moving to Hanahan in 1993, William has watched the city grow from a quiet small town into one of the Lowcountry’s fastest-growing communities. Today, he and his wife are raising their 9-year-old son, a student at Hanahan Elementary, with the same values that drew their family here decades ago: safe neighborhoods, strong schools, and a close-knit community where people know and support one another.

A graduate of The Citadel with a degree in Business Administration, William built his career helping families and communities recover after disasters as a national catastrophe claims adjuster before launching TAP Insurance Agency. His experience working on the frontlines of crisis response and running a local business has given him a firsthand understanding of planning, accountability, and the real-world impact government decisions have on families and small businesses.

William has dedicated himself to serving Hanahan through volunteerism and community leadership. He has volunteered with the Hanahan Elementary PTO, coached youth recreation sports, served his local church, and sits on the boards of several nonprofit organizations throughout the area. Through those experiences, he has seen both the opportunities and growing pains facing Hanahan—and believes the city needs leadership willing to ask tough questions, plan responsibly, and put residents first.

William is running for City Council because he believes Hanahan can continue to grow without losing the small-town character that makes it a gem of the Lowcountry. He supports responsible growth with proper guardrails, smarter long-term infrastructure planning, and greater transparency from city leadership. He believes residents deserve a government that communicates openly, listens to the community, and provides accountability instead of rubber-stamping major decisions.

With deep roots in Hanahan and a vision focused on transparency, families, public safety, infrastructure, and responsible growth, William Axson is committed to protecting what makes Hanahan special while building a stronger future for the next generation.
